Because limestone is made of calcium cemented sand, it is harder than it's usual counterpart, sandstone. Ironically, it is this cement in limestone that readily dissolves eventually forming underground crevices extending for miles. Limestone caves are considered only temporary features of the landscape which may only exist for several hundred thousand years before completely eroding away.
