Sinkholes come in all sizes, ranging from discreet to quite obvious. They are generally caused by underground streams washing out debris though they may also form when massive blocks of rocks break away from an outcrop producing a void (see "cave, sandstone"). In coal country they are formed by improper (or unlucky) mining techniques.
