Sumps and near sumps

For most people sumps are one of the most feared obstacle of an otherwise splashy stream crawl. Of the many reasons it may form, one reason may be that water is pinned just above or below an aquatard, ready to change levels in the rock formation. Cavers always think they can come back during a drought and the passage will be dry or at least a near sump. Sumps are what cave divers dream about.
