What is a Zebralight?

It's an admittedly odd name for a remarkably well thought-out line of performance headlamps. The design is strikingly innovative – nothing about the lamp assembly copies what has been done before.  Rather, Zebralight developers reverse-engineered their product using a design philosophy of “given a certain battery type, how can we build the most usable, efficient, high performance and affordable light possible?” From their humble beginnings in 2006 with just one headlamp, their product line has matured to now include over 20 flashlights and headlamps – with more groundbreaking lights on the horizon. Their current product line includes cutting edge lights that sell exceedingly well to a rapidly expanding customer base! And, Zebralight is an American owned and operated company, based out of Irving, TX – all US orders ship from there.

What Sets Them Apart?

• Size and weight: Unbelievably compact and light – especially important features for a headlamp that will satisfy any user.

• Performance: Produces industry-leading output and run times in all battery configurations available.

• User Interface (UI): Standardized across all models and is highly regarded for its simple, intuitive access to all three illumination levels using just a single button click.

• Durable, Solid-metal Construction: Each light is machined from a single piece of premium Alcoa aluminum and features a natural hard anodized finish (Type III Class I).

Why Does BCM Like Them?

BCM is rather discriminating when it comes to field gear and our staff has found Zebralights to be exceptionally durable in hostile caving environments. They are mud-, water-, and shock-resistant. The high-powered LED lamp is an exceedingly bright, yet compact and comfortable enough to use anywhere. They have rechargeable battery packs that provide plenty of run time between charges. Expedition-cavers are using these with a single battery for an entire trip. For field use, Zebralights are bright enough to see bats in a 12-meter triple high mist net and can go a for several nights of bat-trapping between charges. Most users found these lamps were actually -too bright- on the "high" setting, especially when untangling bats. Adjusting the illumination settings to medium or even low will provide ideal lighting when working on close-up tasks. We like other little details such as the fact the light is easily flipped for either left or right hand use, and the simple silicone lamp holder really keeps the lens tilted where we want it. In short: This is one of the most robust and versatile headlamps we have ever used.

Zebralight offers a rather dizzying array of models, each with a different combination of "color temperature" and "beam pattern" to suit a large number of customers. At BCM we've cut thru this extensive product catalog and selected what we believe is the ideal configuration to satisfy bat-workers. BCM's featured Zebralight sports a Cool White color temperature to provide unbiased lighting for making more accurate determinations on a bat's key morphological characteristics. (How many "pink faced" little brown myotis are mis-identified initially as Indiana myotis when using a light with a warm color cast?) We've also selected the 80-degree spill / 12-degree Hot Spot beam pattern. This is a good compromise between an ideal "walking around" light and an effective "long-throw beam" for checking bats in large mist net deployments.

If there is anything not to like, it might be the somewhat unusual 18650-size battery. This is the most energy dense cell available and is found in laptops and electric cars. Once you come to grips that a replacement may not be as easy as walking into a convienance store, you will rather appreciate the power and runtime offered in such a small package.
