Program length: four hours, minimum Description: Much more than simply hiring a guide, participants will learn about how caves are formed and why they significantly impact the land. Some of the topics we will cover include researching caves, locating caves, reading topographic maps, and caving safety and general etiquette. We introduce you to different avenues of the caving community including rescue, survey, photography, biology, cartography, and modern vertical techniques. Instead of just talking about it, participants get down and dirty as we explore one of Pennsylvania's or West Virginia's classic horizontal caves. For the truly adventuresome, ours stops may include other local geological landmarks, or fossil mini-trips, and even overnight camping. This program includes beverages and a lunch, and other arrangements are possible. This program is highly flexible and can be tailored on the fly to meet your groups needs. Scout study: This program can be geared so that Girl and Boy Scouts may earn their geology merit badge. A more intensive classroom program ensues which covers all the badge requirements including rock collections, land use impacts and field walks. Participants will be expected to work hard and is not suitable for Junior Girl Scouts or Weblos. Location: This program usually operates near Uniontown, Pennsylvania. Other sites across Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Virginia are possible. The program is individually tailored to each group and location. Rates: Base cost per person is $30.00. Minimum group size is four, maximum is generally 15, but depends on the age group. Overnight camping, additional meals, and other activities may be extra. Please contact us for exact rates, availability, and required equipment lists. |
