Inside the mine

The mine passages total about a mile in length. The trend of the limestone dips steeply into the hillside and as a result the mine is developed on several levels connected by short, steep connecting passages. If viewed on edge, the profile might look something like stair steps. The passages are voluminous, 20' wide and 35' high are common.

This great depth (200'?) and sizable entrances have combined to make a cold air sink, and a temperature gradient from bottom (40°F) to top (52°F).

At the bottom of the mine is a large, stable pool of cold air, perfect for federally endangered Indiana bats.
