Bats after all

After our depressing first night, we split up and began running two sites at the same time. We revisited the Kanawha Falls site (#1) and set up a total of four seperate net sets; the triple high, a double high, and two single highs. Throughout the night bat activity was sporadic, despite a seemingly decent evening weather wise.

We managed to catch one female lactating Northern long eared in the triple high net set around 9:20. Other than that excitement, we gave the Kanawha Falls site a "suck" rating.

Perhaps this site is simply too close to the impressive ledge series of Kanawha Falls itself. Perhaps our other quieter island sites will fare better.

Site #2 is located at Gauley Bridge and fared a much higher volume of bats. A total of 59 little browns were caught, and all but four were female. Activity was constant from dusk through 2:00 a.m. This suggests that somewhere nearby there could be a significant maturnity colony, or perhaps the bats are dispersed throughout many older structures nearby.

Three nets were strung together, reaching out a total of 48 meters into the Kanawha, this set provided most of the activity. Another set (double high 6M) was setup under the nearby bridge at the mouth of the Gauley River.

During a visit to a local store we learned of the ongoing exclusion attempts of some adjoining buildings. In a few days perhaps we will investigate this further.
