Today we arrived at the base camp near Kingston, NY. We spent most of the late afternoon unloading vehicles and sorting equipment. We located the mine portals closest to the base camp, but discovered that significant safety problems prevented any easy trap deployment.

With dusk upon us we set up one of our night vision video cameras and watched the action from the comforts of base camp. All told nearly 30 bats were witnessed using multiple entrances. Tomorrow we will check another nearby sodalis site for trap suitability and be ready for action.

Below: Scene of mine workings near base camp. A windy blowhole is behind the outcrop on the left, while another entrance is in the shadows right of center.
