This afternoon we confirmed the first roost for Ibat#1: a 60' white oak only 2,200' from the release point.

In the evening the bat was staked out with three receiver teams. After a bit of foraging, it took off to the southeast without looking back. The lack of E-W roads combined with a river and mountain barrier made catch-up quite a challenge in the dark, in the light misty rain/fog. We did manage to somehow stay in FRONT of the bat this time, though that's usually the exception to the rule.

Nevertheless we chased the bat down into West Bank, no doubt poised to cross the Hudson River tonight. This first real jump was nearly 7.5 miles...while not in a terrible rush it's clear this bat has somewhere to go. Connecticut, watch out!

Left: Our hefty female sodalis, sporting a mini transmitter from Canada. Fortunately it appears the bat will not try to return the transmitter to the manufacturer.
