| This night was more exciting than most in awhile. Once again we had sodalis mixed with police action.
Two traps were running tonight, and at the usual mine site 70 bats were captured. Male little browns outnumbered females 43 to 11, while male big browns outnumbered females 10 to 1. A pipistrelle, longeared, and a small footed were also represented. A single male Indiana was captured around 2:00 AM. The alternate site close to our base was also set up, capturing a total of 41 bats. The night was predominantly male...only three females in all were captured. 26 big browns made up the bulk of the captures. Three male Indiana bats were also captured, one by 10:15 and two others by 1:30 AM. The operation was interrupted around 11:00 by two truckloads of loud hoopies whipping past our base camp to disappear into the woods. Knowing the roads are impassable we assumed they were set to party at one of the abandoned mines nearby. A short walk with the night vision equipment verified this easily-- the group could be observed building a cozy bonfire in the entrance to the "cave". The landowner was notified who sent in police to investigate. The hoops were found to be part of a larger group of guests of the property. Apparently they thought it was perfectly fine to drive vehicles down closed roads, build a large fire in the mouth of a mine, and drink the night away without any consideration of the landowner. No charges were pressed as long as there were no complaints. The site was investigated previously and found to contain little, if any, bats present. Fortunately other sites are not as easily accessible to the general public. |
