For the last 8 years or so, we've had a few bats using the upper wall of our front porch for an overnight rest stop. The wall is about 15 ft. high and the ceiling meets it at a 45 degree angle, so it is a very sheltered area. Beginning in mid April a few bats arrive around 1 AM every night without exception and stay until 5 AM when they all leave. By early May we are up to around 20 or so with young ones as well. After the young ones appear, they remain during the day along with 1 or 2 adults. This lasts for a couple of months and then they all leave during the day and return again to spend part of the night. In October, there are fewer bats each night until they leave until the next spring. This annual event began with only a couple of bats but we seem to be growing by 2-3 a year. We live in an area with hundreds of caves and numerous colonies, Nickajack Lake, Cloudland Canyon State Park and Pigeon Mountain just to name a few. We love having the bats, but as you know they leave a very impressive pile as a gift every morning on the threshold of our front door. If we leave the front porch light on, they will not come, but we want them, just not over the front door. The problem is how to keep them overnight, just in a different place. All the bat houses I find seem to offer them a place to spend the day, not the few hours at night that they use our house for. Any meaningful thoughts, comments or suggestions would be appreciated. If I were to drill holes in the wood with a 7/8&quot; drill bit I have, would that work as a bat box? Window screens will help and having your house properly sealed or use the industry term have the house excluded. This is best left for a company with bat experience when done improperly many bats can die and or your house will still let bats in. But if this man is going to kill them then this may not be a good option nor is gathering them and placing them in your home. I know everyone is going to think that I am biased but it is because most people can not do it properly themselves without some kind of training and will kill far more then they help. We see the homeowner with good intentions all the time kill many bats trying to rid the house of them.
