Is WNS related to Btk being sprayed?
03/28/10 at 04:53:58

Is anyone looking into a correlation with Btk being sprayed in the areas where the hibernating bats are dying.  I googled a few areas with the bat deathes for Btk use, including Canada, and found its use mentioned.  Could bats eating bugs that either had the Btk on them or in them introduce or make bats suspectacle to a fungus that hibernating in the caves intensifies.

Yes to the first question...
I examined both Kurstaki strains SA-11 and 12  using matrix matching techniques http://forums.caves.org/viewtopic.php?f=58&t=9916&sid=63895f47ae4103e801a307cf01... and found that SA11 is used in the SE corner of NY state with a high correlation (23.098)  to bat foraging areas and SA-12 was found more to the West also in foraging areas, but the score was a little lower (5.195).
Score is a relative measure of correlation to assumed foraging areas (based on data provided by JC)for those hibernation locations having higest death counts. The software is still in development and the matrices are also being updated with more recent data, so these results are subject to change.

Do you have additional information that would lead you to suspect that BTK is a problem? If not, then from what I have read about it so far does not worry me....compared to other toxins, it is relatively harmless.

No evidence.  Just a hunch based on the fact that I remembered New Zealand spraying Btk when I saw they were having the same bat problem.  I checked a number of other areas around caves with bats dying and they all had sprayed Btk.  Sorry, I researched the stuff back a few years ago when they sprayed it here.  At the least it is too unknown, at the worst people with lung problems were at risk.  I found one study that showed the Btk bacteria staying around in people for months.  A few hours after they sprayed the area I live in, everything started smelling really badly.  It was just like having a bad cold for several weeks and getting a sinus infection.  I had not been sick and within a couple of days had a bad sinus infection.  So I don't trust the stuff and my hunches are usually good, scarey as that can be at times.

The smelly media used to grow Btk includes fish meal, and Tryptone, which has a distinctive fecal odor.

Please read this description of how the Btk fungus works.  It sounds exactly like what is happening to the bats.  If the bats are in hibernation, wouldn't that negate the theory of Btk not affecting mammals because they are warm blooded?

In my first post I mentioned New Zealand in error and have revised that post.  The mass bat deaths in New Zealand were due to a pesticide aimed at rats.  They were not WNS related.
