Bat Conservation and Management participated in the 45th North American Symposium on Bat Research in Monterey, CA in November 2015. Associates John Chenger, Nate Fuller, David Riggs, Kirk Silas, Joe Szewczak, Nick Szewczak, and Janet Tyburec participated.
Our staff and associates taught three back-to-back KY Capture Techniques Workshops this September and an Acoustic Data Management workshop in PA and all were big successes. A few updates from the class are posted on BCM's Facebook page.
Our CA Capture Techniques Workshop and ME Data Management Workshop were both a big success. A few updates from the class are posted on BCM's Facebook page. We plan to continue adding "notes from the field" during our dual KY workshops later this season.
Our AZ Capture Techniques has been completed and a few updates from the class are posted on BCM's Facebook page. We plan to continue adding "notes from the field" during our ME, CA, and KY workshops later this season.
Roy D. Powers Jr., 75, Duffield, VA passed away peacefully at his home Sunday, March 29, 2015. He was recognized as the leading authority on cave gates in the world. His work protects many bat species in 18 different states and his designs have been applied to gates around the world. Visit Roy's Legacy Page on Facebook.

02/25: BCM is packing for the joint North American Bat Working Group meeting in St. Louis next week; nearly 400 participants are expected! John Chenger and Janet Tyburec will be presenting this poster: Comparing Classifiers for Detecting the Florida Bonneted Bat.
Considering bat training? Since 1992 BCM staff has taught 147 workshops at 98 different venues across North America for over 2,500 participants from around the world.
Need a training workshop or acoustic monitoring gear but short on cash? Great gear from Binary Acoustics, Pettersson, SonoBat, and training from BCM is available to winners of various Bob Berry Scholarships. See the Western Bat Working Group for details on how to participate; students and faculty are welcome.
BCM is partnering with Florida Fish and Wildlife to survey for the federally endangered Florida Bonneted Bat -and- field testing SonoBat Florida and Kaleidoscope Pro bat call analysis programs.
BCM assisted the Forest Preserve District of Will County, IL in an effort to encourage a maternity colony of big brown bats to relocate to a BCM Mini Bat Condo. Read all about it and see photos here, and here. J. Armstrong-Ullberg, B. Butler, J. Chenger, D. Darrow, K. Silas, and J. Tyburec finished installation (see video) in less than two days.
4th Annual Mammoth Cave Bat Night was a blazing success with about 300 people attending. John Chenger contributed a live acoustic monitoring station while Janet Tyburec demonstrated a mist net station. Other stations staffed by NPS and other biologists included night vision equipment, an insect trap, and live bats, set in the ambiance of the Historic Entrance to Mammoth Cave.

Where is BCM? During the 2014 season we have completed:
- bat capture surveys in MO, PA, IA, MD, KY, and AZ (the majority which were environmental assessments for Indiana bats)
- radio telemetry assistance/collaboration on Myotis septentrionalis in PA
- radio telemetry on 13 Myotis septentrionalis in PA
- radio telemetry tracking 2 Myotis leibii to barns in PA
- 602 acoustic monitoring sites in PA and counting
- 113 acoustic monitoring sites in NY
- 48 nights of acoustic monitoring in FL
- 16 nights of Allegheny woodrat trapping
- 7 abandoned mine trapping surveys
We tested 10 different long-term passive mic configurations from 3 manufacturers in a week long real-world batty environment. We are also making recordings with the new Echometer Touch, watch our reviews section for updates.
Join John Chenger/BCM and Janet Tyburec/JTConsulting test-driving the new Wildlife Acoustics SM3 bat detector. We will be putting these detectors thru their paces at all of our workshops along side the usual assortment of makes and models from Wildlife Acoustics and other manufacturers.
John Chenger, Todd Sinander (BCM), and Dave Riggs (Myotisoft) recently assisted the PA Game Commission with winter bat surveys in several caves and mines. Check out video and photos!
BCM is now supplying the Bat Bunker artificial roost. We made some in-house mods to the shell and increased the capacity to make it a "Plus" for your local bat population!
Where was BCM? During the 2013 season we successfully completed:
~262 nights of bat capture surveys in PA, OH, WV, IA, KY, and AZ (the majority which were environmental assessments for Indiana bats)
~216 nights of acoustic monitoring in PA, IA, NY, OH, KY, and WV
~33 nights of trapping and acoustic monitoring abandoned mine features in PA
~radio tracking on two Indiana bats
~day and night radio tracking on three Eastern small-footed bats
Janet Tyburec presented Calculating Accuracy Rates Among BCID, EchoClass, Kaleidoscope Pro, and SonoBat at the 2014 SBDN Meeting; John Chenger and Joe Szewczak coauthored.
Janet Tyburec and John Chenger presented Comparing bat detector deployments at different heights, in different orientations, and using different microphone types at the 2014 SBDN Meeting.
Using Auto-classifiers to Determine Occupancy: Clinton, NJ Chenger and Tyburec presented a mini symposia at the 2014 NEBWG meeting and at the 2014 SBDN meeting demonstrating real-world results of auto-classification software with 130 people in attendance.
Acoustic Monitoring Decision Maker Workshop: State College, PA Chenger and Tyburec presented a custom workshop for Region 5 biologists and land managers in October 2013 to demonstrate best practices for collecting echolocation calls, real-world results of auto-classification software, and protocols for acoustic inventory and monitoring of bats.
2013 Society of Mining Engineers Anthracite Section John Chenger was the keynote speaker at the 2013 Society of Mining Engineers Anthracite Section meeting and spoke on threats to bats which is driving changes to sampling protocols.
