Canoe Creek State Park
This state park is located near Altoona, PA and is the summer and winter home for over 20,000 bats, including a number of federally endangered Indiana bats. The area's bat ecosystem has been the focus of a number of detailed studies in recent years. An abandoned limestone mine on the property affords winter protection while a historic church and other artificial roosts nearby offer plenty of summer housing. The park has developed a number of interpretative trails, exhibits, and programs which capitalize on the unique "watchable wildlife" opportunity.
