He began his work with bats investigating their physiological regulation through the differential demands of cold hibernative torpor to the intense demands of flight and high altitude. He has since applied a physiological ecology perspective to conservation and management issues of bats such as roosting, foraging, energetics, and their basic wildlife-habitat associations. He teaches bat biology and acoustic monitoring field classes and workshops regularly throughout the US and abroad. Joe began collecting full-spectrum recordings of bats more than 30 years ago with the notion that they may someday prove useful for identifying bats, and ultimately developed SonoBat to fill the gap he needed to facilitate the specialized tasks of viewing, analyzing, and comparing bat echolocation calls and sequences for non-invasive species recognition.

John Chenger formed BCM in 1998 to provide bat-specific surveys nationwide, successful artificial bat roosts, and field gear. SonoBat Workflow and Eastern Call ID Workshop - Carlisle, PA & Online October 15-17, 2024

Product Description
$1,450.00
Maximum quantity available reached.

This class is designed to jumpstart users towards responsibly interpreting acoustic bat detector studies required by agencies, clients, and professional researchers. The focus is on post processing bat acoustic data and Eastern US species ID, featuring the SonoBat software program with a brief introduction to Kaleidoscope Pro. Students receive guided practice on how to interpret "auto-classification" decisions from two software programs and how to manually confirm or reject the computer-estimated "probable species presence" results using SonoBat30. Two evening activities will demonstrate passive and active recording hardware and mobile transect techniques.

This hybrid class provides intensive, in-person, classroom-based training, as well as an option to follow most activities remotely. Informal "geek sessions" are planned during evenings for even more contact 1-on-1 time with instructors. A real dataset allows everyone to appreciate the types of issues that may arise during typical acoustic survey efforts in the region, avoiding common pitfalls others have suffered, and maximizing survey efficiency for the upcoming season. Participants will keep 80+ archetypal recordings discussed in depth for use as references. Class size, including remote participants, is limited for best experience.

Bat Call ID Workshop Curriculum Highlights

• 2.5 days/26.5 hours of contact time with 4 instructors of combined 80+ years experience, 2 evening field recording events, 2 informal geek sessions, 2 lunches and dinners.
